Devlog #00 - Brainstorming Phase!

Hi everyone!

We are a group of five students from the curriculum Digital Arts and Entertainment at Howest University of Applied Sciences. This week we received the task to make an entire level, full of cool features, mechanics and art by the end of the semester. We started with a brief introduction from the lecturers and met our group members for the first time, after a short setup we were ready to begin.

Without any delay, our group started working on creating the idea. We sat together and brainstormed about three hours. We discussed what existing games/genres we like. What mechanics are nice and which are not.

The artists came up with an idea to build our game around cute farm animals, in particular geese and chickens. We all liked the theme, so we spent the next three days to come up with some unique mechanics that could fit this theme. On Friday, we planned a meeting to compare and organize our ideas. A good tool for this kind of things is a "Miro board", the most interesting ideas are here:

  • A fighting game where the players are eggs and have to kill each other in order to get points.
  • A 2D fit the shape game, the players have to cooperate, jump, fly, boost themselves to pass a moving wall with a hole in it.
  • A couple of game ideas, where you compete against the other player to sell lemonade/pizza/ etc.
  • ...

During our meeting, we refined the ideas and came up with even better mechanics, then we voted on the best one. The idea which we went with is based on the first mentioned above. We chose to add some new features, such as weapons that drop from the sky, eggs with goofy bodies, and a human who occasionally passes by, forcing the eggs to run away from the giant shadow to survive.

After that we talked about our next steps, we planned what we are going to research. In addition to that we also discussed the art style and music. Last but not least, we searched for a good name for our game and we finally went with: "Eggsterminated!".

Get Eggsterminated!
